Mary Holland, Vice President of Retail Banking at United Bank & Trust, announces her upcoming retirement on June 6, 2025, celebrating a banking career of more than 40 years.Mary Holland

After earning her degree in Business Education from Mankato State University in 1981, Holland spent the early years of her career teaching high school business in Blue Earth, MN.  Her banking career began in 1984 at Central Trust & Savings Bank in Cherokee, IA as a Consumer Loan Officer, after relocating due to her husband’s career. Another move in 1989 took them to Webster City, where Holland worked at Farmers National Bank as a Personal Banking Officer.  In 1992 they found themselves making one last move – to Marshalltown.  Since then, Marshalltown has been home to them.  Holland continued in the banking industry for Midland Savings Bank and Hawkeye Bank until 2000. She then worked as a credit analyst for two years at Emerson Process Management/Fisher Controls.

In 2002, Mary was invited to join a small team of local bankers to open a de novo bank in Marshalltown.  The team began with six experienced bankers from other local financial institutions who wanted to create a new community bank, whose focus would be on customer relationships and community support.  In May 2002, the planning began, and with the help of Ames National Corporation and local investors, United Bank & Trust opened that June.  While the permanent building was in the process of being constructed, the employees conducted business out of a double-wide trailer.  They opened the very first deposit accounts and loans from this temporary location before settling into their new space in December 2002.

Holland has fond memories from those days, and as she reflects on her banking career, she shared, “Banking has been a rewarding and challenging career and has offered many opportunities for learning and growth. I’ve truly enjoyed building relationships with customers over the years and helping clients with financial services. I will miss the interactions and relationships with customers and coworkers.”

“Mary has been a long-standing, highly respected member of the bank and banking community and will be missed by many.  Her dedication to customer service is unmatched in the industry, and United Bank & Trust has been fortunate to have her as a key employee for 23 years.  We congratulate Mary on this milestone and wish the her best in retirement,” commented Robert Thomas, President of United Bank & Trust.

Throughout her career, Mary has been involved in various organizations.  She has been a dedicated member of the Noon Optimist Club for the past 21 years, serving as a board member and holding various offices. She was also a long-standing member of Beta Sigma Phi for 38 years and remains an active participant in her church.

In retirement, Mary looks forward to spending more time with family and friends, golfing, biking, reading, traveling, and attending her grandchildren’s activities.

Please join us in celebrating Mary Holland’s remarkable career and well-earned retirement at an open house on Friday, June 6, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at United Bank & Trust, 2101 S. Center Street.  Appetizers and cake will be served as we honor her years of service, dedication, and the lasting relationships she’s built along the way.
