Small Business Spotlight: Bringing a Unique Taste to Marshalltown

Tannin Wine Bar, which originally opened in 2018, was purchased by Gary and Megan Lanfier in January 2023. The small restaurant and bar serves wine, craft beer, and food options ranging from snacks to dinner. Since taking over the business, the Lanfiers have made it a priority to host many events, including live music, trivia, and music bingo. On top of all that, Tannin is also a rental space perfect for baby or bridal showers and anniversary, graduation, birthday, and work parties.
“We have always wanted to own our own business and Megan loved Tannin before working there and then owning it,” Gary explained. “When the previous owners approached us to purchase [Tannin] from them, we took the leap and have loved every minute of it.”
Like many new small business owners, the Lanfiers had many questions when they ventured to buy Tannin. Thankfully, as they told us, “United Bank & Trust helped us from the beginning. We had so many questions and uncertainties when it came to purchasing Tannin and the staff went above and beyond helping us make our dream become reality. The Lanfiers especially love owning their business in Marshalltown because of its unique atmosphere. “Marshalltown needs a unique spot like Tannin. It’s not your normal bar,” the Lanfiers explained. “We have zero TVs and offer an intimate setting for quality time with your family and friends.”
Thanks to United Bank & Trust’s help, the Lanfiers can focus on continuing to build relationships with their customers. Since owning Tannin, the Lanfiers said, “we have met some of the most amazing people and have gained some awesome friendships. We are truly blessed.”
