Check Fraud of Mailed Credit Card Payments

Posted on Friday, November 14, 2025 in Security and Fraud Prevention

Protecting our customers and their money is always a top priority. Recently, banks across the country have seen an increase in fraud involving credit card payments that are sent by mail. Unfortunately, some mailed check payments are being intercepted before they reach the credit card company.

Here’s what’s happening:
Criminals are stealing mailed payments, removing the checks, and “washing” them—using chemicals to erase the ink. They then change the payee and the amount before depositing the altered check into their own account. This results in a fraudulent withdrawal from your checking account, often for a much higher amount than your original payment.

How You Might Discover a Problem
Customers often first notice something is wrong when:

  • Their credit card company notifies them that a payment is past due.
  • A check clears for an amount higher than what they wrote.
  • Their account balance is lower than expected or becomes overdrawn.

If you see any of these warning signs, please contact United Bank & Trust right away. We’re here to help you take the necessary steps to protect your account.

Safer Ways to Make Payments
To help reduce the risk of mailed check fraud, consider using more secure payment methods:

  • Automatic payments: Set up recurring payments directly with your credit card company to ensure they’re received on time.
  • Online or mobile payments: Use your credit card’s website or mobile app for fast, secure transactions.
  • Phone payments: Call your credit card company’s secure payment line to make payments safely.

In addition, regularly monitoring your accounts can help detect any unusual activity early:

  • Check your transactions: Review your statements and account activity frequently through online or mobile banking.
  • Set up transaction alerts: Transaction alerts can be set up within United Bank & Trust’s online or mobile banking.
