Small Business Spotlight: Brewing Success in Marshalltown

Posted on Wednesday, May 7, 2025 in Small Business Spotlights

What began as a retirement dream has blossomed into a community favorite. Scooter’s CoffeeScooter's Coffee in Marshalltown opened on December 31, 2021, just two months after construction began. Serving espresso, coffee, specialty drinks, along with smoothies, pastries, and breakfast options, the location has quickly become a go-to spot for morning pick-me-ups and afternoon boosts.

The store is owned by Stan Eilers, a retired pathologist who sought a business venture that would be both energizing and customer-focused. “Specialty coffee was growing, and seemed to be a positive, upbeat business,” Eilers said. “I was ready for something different—something that generated excitement and energy.”

That energy is reflected not only in the drinks but also in the team. Eilers says he enjoys the youthful enthusiasm of his employees and takes pride in satisfying customers. “I really like making people happy with our products,” he shared. “And getting to know more about Marshalltown and its people has been incredibly rewarding.”

Eilers, who already owned three Scooter’s Coffee locations in Cedar Rapids, wanted to expand and open another store within an hour’s radius. He remembered Marshalltown only vaguely from high school events, but when Scooter’s Coffee identified the city as a potential growth market, Eilers began exploring further. After connecting with local business leaders—including those at United Bank and Trust—his plans started taking shape.

“United Bank and Trust played a key role,” Eilers explained. “Sam [Upah] and Doug [Husak] were instrumental in resolving real estate issues. Their partnership made the difference.” The bank has remained a valuable partner in the ongoing operations of the store.

Scooter’s Coffee continues to grow its presence in Marshalltown, proving that with the right mix of passion, support, and a cup of coffee, new beginnings can brew success.
